Driving Instructions to El Castillo:

Driving from San Jose

The driving time from San Jose is around 3 hours to Fortuna, and then another 30 minutes to El Castillo. When coming from Fortuna go west toward the volcano about 20 km. Two km after passing the Tabacon Resort you will come to a small police booth on the right with the entrance road to the Arenal National Park of the left. From that corner just follow the signs for the Butterfly Conservatory 9 km until you arrive to the village of El Castillo.

About half way you will come to a bridge that has nice views of the volcano, take the road to the right crossing the small wood bridge and continue 3 km to El Castillo. After crossing the metal bridge just before El Castillo, turn left at the school on the corner and go 400 mts through the village... go up the hill on the cement road, the Butterfly Bungalows are the first entrance on the left and has a large beige fence and gate.

The Butterfly Conservatory is another 200 mts further up the same road; if you get there you have gone too far, but just ask anyone for Glenn's house.

Driving from Liberia

When coming from Liberia turn at Canas toward the East, and continue on to Tilaran and Nuevo Arenal before arriving to the Arenal Lake dam. 2 km after crossing the dam you will see a small police check point on the left, and on the right the road to Arenal National Park and El Castillo. Follow the signs to the Butterfly Conservatory for 9 km on the dirt road.

When coming from the Pacific Coast you will pass through Tilaran and Nuevo Arenal before arriving to the Arenal Lake dam. 2 km after crossing the dam you will come to the road to El Castillo, turn right and follow the signs for 9 km on the dirt road until you arrive to the village of El Castillo.
